A portion of U.S. 60 in Mesa was blocked Tuesday morning after a seven-vehicle crash and vehicle fire, the Arizona Department of Transportation said on X, formerly Twitter.
The right-most lanes were reopened around 8 a.m., but the left lanes were still closed. Traffic was directed onto the shoulder to pass the scene until lanes were reopened.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a cement mixer rear-ended a pickup truck that had stopped or slowed due to traffic congestion. The crash caused the pickup to catch fire.
A Chandler Police Department motorcycle officer broke the truck’s window, and with help from an off-duty firefighter, pulled the driver to safety just before the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.
The pickup truck driver was transported to a hospital.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m. between the exits for Val Vista and Greenfield roads.
Arizona DPS spokesperson Raul Garcia said the accident resulted in “moderate injuries.”
Traffic was backed up about 4 miles at 7:30 a.m., ADOT said.
Motorists should expect delays. ADOT said drivers could take westbound Loop 202 Red Mountain or Loop 202 Santan freeways to get around the traffic.
ADOT did not say when all the lanes would reopen.
