A semitruck transporting Twix candy bars erupted in flames early Tuesday, resulting in a temporary closure of Loop 303 in north Phoenix. The incident occurred shortly before 5 a.m. on Loop 303 near milepost 137, prompting a response from emergency services.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the semitruck driver heard a series of popping noises coming from the rear of the truck. Concerned for his safety and that of other motorists, he quickly pulled over to the side of the freeway. Upon inspection, he discovered flames coming from the trailer’s wheel area.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze. Photographs taken by DPS show the aftermath of the fire, revealing a charred trailer and a sticky mess of melted Twix bars scattered in the roadway.
As the fire was being contained, DPS closed the westbound lanes of Loop 303 at 43rd Avenue, diverting traffic away from the scene.
No injuries were reported, and the closure did not result in major traffic backups.
The roadway remained closed for approximately two and a half hours while crews worked to extinguish flames and clear debris from the highway. By 7:40 a.m., all westbound traffic was allowed to resume, restoring normal flow on the busy freeway.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
